Reading Wonders -Letter of the Week
- Cut and Paste 3-6 Pictures that begin with the letter of the week. Find pictures using magazines, newspapers, the internet, etc. Practice writing the letter or word on the line next to the picture. For more of a challenge write a sentence!

Things You Can Do At Home
PRACTICE:
- tying shoes
- reciting personal information such as birthday, address, phone number and age
- use the bathroom independently and hygiene tasks
- able to dress on his or her own (puts on coat and fastens, buttons, zippers, snaps)
- blowing his or her nose
- cleaning up personal space
- opening and closing back packs
- putting papers in a folder
- listening to a story without interrupting
PHONEMIC AWARENESS:
Flashcards: Use index cards to create flashcards to practice letters, numbers, and site words.
Pictures: Place pictures around your house and have your child tell you what letter the word starts with
Magnetic Letters: Place uppercase and lowercase letters on your fridge and the possibilities are endless!
Shaving Cream writing: Spray shaving cream on a table and practice writing and identifying letters.
Playdough fun: make letters using playdough. Use letter stamps and create letters.
Sand art: Trace letters and numbers in a homemade sand box.
Food: Use different types of cereal and candy to have your child sort out the different kinds, as well as, create patterns using the different foods.
Homework Hints
1. Convey to your child your expectations about homework and stick to them.
2. Set aside a special time and proper study area each night for homework.
3. Create a homework survival kit which is a box with all the supplies that may be needed for homework (scissors, glue, pencils, crayons etc.).
4. Show interest in your child's homework including reading assignments.
5. Offer much praise and motivation.
6. Contact the teacher with any homework concerns.
7. Guide and assist children as much as needed.
8. Stay involved and informed.

Read Everyday!
- The most important activity to help your child develop language and reading skills is to practice reading everyday!
- As you read, move your finger along under the words from left to right.
- Point out sight words in text.
- Allow your child to use the pictures as clues to help tell what is happening in a story
- Discuss the main parts of a book such as the setting, characters
- Read every night for a minimum of ten minutes
